What is IELTS?

IELTS — the International English Language Testing System — is the international standard test of English proficiency for non-native speakers, managed by the British Council, IDP IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment English. Founded in 1989, it is today the prime English language assessment worldwide, comprising four modules: listening, reading, writing and speaking.

It comes in two versions: IELTS Academic for higher education and professional registration, and IELTS General Training for migration to Australia, Canada and the UK or secondary education and work-experience programs. Speaking and listening are the same in both; reading and writing differ.

IELTS Modules Explained

Listening (30 minutes + 10 to transfer answers)

Four parts of ten questions each, in the same order as the recording. Parts 1–2 cover everyday and social situations; parts 3–4 cover educational and training contexts. Question types include multiple choice, matching, diagram labelling and sentence completion.

Reading (60 minutes)

Three passages with 40 questions in total, drawn from books, journals, magazines, newspapers and online resources written for a non-specialist audience — sometimes with diagrams, graphs and illustrations.

Writing (60 minutes)

Two tasks: a 150-word letter or report (20 minutes) and a discursive essay responding to an argument or problem.

Speaking (10–14 minutes)

A recorded face-to-face interview with an examiner in three parts — general questions, a topic talk, and follow-up discussion.
